What is Restate?

Restate is a lightweight runtime that turns AI agents, workflows, and backend services into durable processes. Write normal code in TypeScript, Python, Java, Kotlin, Go, or Rust; Restate journals each step and resumes from the last completed step after failures. Deploy a single self-contained binary on your laptop or Kubernetes, or use Restate Cloud with usage-based pricing.

How to use Restate?

Install the Restate server and CLI (e.g. brew install restatedev/tap/restate-server restatedev/tap/restate), start restate-server, then follow the Quickstart in the docs to run a Greeter service on port 9080. For Restate Cloud, sign up at cloud.restate.dev and deploy your handlers to Kubernetes, AWS Lambda, Cloudflare Workers, Vercel, or other supported platforms.

What is durable execution?

Durable execution is a programming paradigm that makes ordinary code resilient to crashes, restarts, and infrastructure failures. A durable execution engine records each step of a function as it runs, so when something fails, the function resumes from the last completed step instead of restarting from scratch.

What is an action in Restate Cloud?

Durable actions are the basic unit of accounting in Restate Cloud. Each durable function call counts as 2 actions (invocation + completion) plus its intermediate durable actions such as steps, RPC sends, promises, futures, sleeps, and awakeables.

Can I self-host Restate?
